Frequently Asked Questions

What is chiropractic and what do chiropractors treat?

Doctors of Chiropractic (DCs) care for patients of all ages, with a variety of health conditions.  DCs are especially well known for their expertise in caring for patients with back pain, neck pain and headaches...particularly with their highly skilled  manipulations or chiropractic adjustments. They also care for patients with a wide range of injuries and disorders of the musculoskeletal system, involving the muscles, ligaments and joints. These painful conditions often involve or impact the nervous system, which can cause referred pain and dysfunction distant to the region of injury. The benefits of chiropractic care extend to general health issues, as well, since our body structure affects our overall function. DCs also counsel patients on diet, nutrition, exercise, healthy habits, and occupational and lifestyle modification.

How long do appointments last?

The initial appointment includes a review of your health history, a thorough physical and chiropractic exam and a consultation about your individualized course of treatment. Unless further imaging studies are necessary, treatment will occur on the first visit. Expect about 40 minutes for this appointment. Follow-up visits are 20 minutes.

Is chiropractic appropriate for children?

Yes, children can benefit from chiropractic care. Children are very physically active and experience many types of falls and blows from activities of daily living as well as from participating in sports. Injuries such as these may cause many symptoms including back and neck pain, stiffness, soreness or discomfort. Chiropractic care is always adapted to the individual patient. It is a highly skilled treatment, and in the case of children, very gentle.

What should I wear for my appointment?

Loose fitting or athletic attire may be more comfortable during your adjustment, but are not mandatory. You may be provided with a chiropractic gown if skin contact for soft tissue work/cupping is necessary.

Why should I get adjusted during pregnancy?

The body goes through tremendous physical, hormonal and emotional changes during pregnancy. These changes can cause discomfort with everyday tasks such as sleeping, exercising, work and chores at home. Chiropractic adjustments can address the structural changes of the body as you progress throughout your pregnancy. We can also help you with nutritional considerations, symptoms of nausea or heartburn and exercise considerations to keep you active and healthy.

What is the Webster Technique?

The Webster Technique is a protocol used during pregnancy to help with the alignment of the pelvis. This technique can be used safely and effectively to determine any misalignments of the bony structure of the pelvis as well as the surrounding joints, ligaments and muscles. After adjusting with the Webster technique women commonly feel relief of low back and hip pain, sciatica and pubic pain. This is especially important in 3rd trimester so that the baby can be in the optimal position as the body prepares for labor and birth. Studies have shown that women who are adjusted throughout their pregnancy can have shorter labor and delivery times by up to 24%!

What are the benefits of getting adjusted postpartum?

The benefits of being adjusted after delivery are similar to those of pregnancy adjustments. Whether you have had a vaginal birth or cesarean section, the birthing process is a very abrupt change to your skeletal structure as well as the surrounding muscles, ligaments and joints. The hormone relaxin that allowed the pelvic structure to expand during birth is present for 4-5 months postpartum. This hormone can create excess movement in spinal joints and other joints of the body which can cause increased incidence of pain and injury. Postural stresses from breastfeeding and carrying an infant can also be addressed at postpartum visits. Additionally, advice on baby wearing, carrying heavy carseats, postpartum nutrition and breastfeeding can be discussed.

How soon can I be adjusted after delivery?

This is absolutely up to you. Some women get adjusted during labor so there is no time that’s too soon postpartum. That being said you may enjoy some time at home to bond with your baby and settle into to your routine as a new family. Don’t stress about your chiropractic appointment but it will provide some sweet relief during your postpartum healing process. Dr. Covell generally calls within 2 weeks of delivery to check on mom and baby, and the first postpartum check-up after treating throughout your pregnancy is free of charge.
